The photo shows parts of the level scheme for the atomic nucleus 122Xe. Each band of levels represents states of defined excitation energy and angular momentum.

At high excitation energies this nucleus exists in two very different configurations. The protons and neutrons can carry the angular momentum collectively, with the nucleus adopting a prolate shape. Alternatively, which is energetically favoured, the nucleus can adopt an oblate shape, with the angular momentum being carried by only a few protons and neutrons at the surface. In this latter configuration the complete alignment of the angular momentum components with the symmetry axis corresponds to an upper limit for the total attainable angular momentum.
